About Hong Kong Apostille

Hong Kong Apostille and Document Legalization Services by
Hague Apostille Services

Hong Kong has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since April 25, 1965, when the United Kingdom extended its membership. Even after Hong Kong’s transition to China, the Convention remained in effect, ensuring seamless authentication of public documents.

An apostille, commonly referred to as the Hague apostille, is an official certification that verifies the authenticity of a document’s origin, signature, and issuing authority. This applies to documents such as birth and marriage certificates, court decisions, company records, and notarial attestations.

Documents issued in Hong Kong and certified with an apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention are legally recognized across 120+ participating countries. This eliminates the need for additional consular legalization, significantly reducing processing time and costs.

However, for countries not part of the Hague Convention, an apostille alone is insufficient. In such cases, consular legalization is required to ensure the document’s acceptance.

Hague Apostille Services streamlines the authentication process, making it faster and more efficient for international document validation.

Apostille Authorities in the Hong Kong

In Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), the competent authorities responsible for issuing apostilles under the Hague Apostille Convention include:

  • Administrative Secretary
  • Registrar of the High Court
  • Senior Deputy Registrar of the High Court
  • Deputy Registrar of the High Court

These officials carefully examine submitted documents to verify signatures, stamps, and seals against official records. Once confirmed as authentic, an apostille certificate is issued, officially legalizing the document.

The Hong Kong apostille is a square-shaped certificate, available in English or Cantonese. It prominently displays the heading “Apostille” along with a reference to the 1961 Hague Convention in French: “Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961”. The certificate measures at least 9 cm per side, ensuring international compliance.

For seamless document authentication in Hong Kong, apostille certification provides fast and hassle-free legalization for global use.
